Roger Chouinard was born and raised in Southern California. He found at an early age that he was good at drawing and making things, but not at spelling. He also discovered the power of imagination when his second grade teacher asked what his poster painting was supposed to be and he replied it was the school burning down. He decided he wanted to be an artist and studied design, drawing, painting and sculpture at the Chouinard Art Institute. Roger started his career working in a design studio and at various film studios as an art director and animation designer. He soon decided to strike out on his own and co-founded the award winning DUCK Studios animation company.
Over the years at DUCK Studios, he designed and directed numerous animated television commercials and his awards in this field include the N.Y. Art Director’s Gold Medal, and multiple CLIO Awards. For his illustration work, he received a Communication Arts Award of Excellence.
Roger has also worked as an illustrator for numerous publications and his projects include three children’s books, two of which he authored. He wrote and illustrated Animal Alphabet and One Magic Box (Doubleday) and in 2009 was chosen by Saks Fifth Avenue to illustrate their annual Christmas storybook,Twinkle Twinkle Little Flake (Harper Collins).
A partial list of his clients include: Levi’s, 7UP, Verizon, Nestle, Saks Fifth Avenue, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Business Week, Forbes Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, ARRP, John Hopkins University, the San Diego Reader and Runner’s World.
Currently living in Topanga California with his wife, two dogs and many books he spends most of his time working on his illustration commissions, book projects, painting and sculpture. He incorporates found objects, images from old books and magazines and his photographs in his artwork. He is inspired by humor, imagination, most things he sees and letting unexpected discoveries guide the way.
Roger’s most recent art exhibits, in Japan and Los Angeles, featured his Robot collage paintings.
